They may also bite the leash out of frustration. They’re still getting used to the unnatural, uncomfortable sensation of having their movement restricted. They want to run and explore and wreak havoc like any good puppy, but they’re held back by this annoying thing around their neck. In this case, just taking some time to patiently leash-train him will help.
TRY IT TRY IT By now your dog is figuring out that “good things come to those who wait” and is starting to work on impulse control without being told. At this point in training, your dog has also figured out that obedience is The Strategy to get what he wants. This empowering realization means your dog understands he can take charge and control the situation to get the outcome he wants, overcoming some of the basic instincts that used to guide his behaviors. x

Hamilton fan Eesti Avoid playing exciting games in the garden before your puppy has toileted, as this is likely to distract them from the main purpose of going outside. If they want to come back inside straight away, or look confused, patiently walk up and down slowly to encourage them to move about and sniff the ground. Stay outside with your puppy until they have done their business at which point you can give gentle praise. Avoid leaving your puppy outside in the hope that they will eventually go to the toilet, as most puppies will not want to be left alone and will instead concentrate on getting back to you, rather than learning to go to the toilet outside. You might also miss the opportunity to praise your puppy if they do go, or if they don’t go, they may then be ‘caught short’ once back in the house!

Freshwater Fish When your dog can consistently stay on his spot for at least 30 seconds, with you standing in front of him, you can start moving toward the door. Say the cue “Go to your spot,” walk with your dog to his spot, ask him to sit or lie down and ask him to stay. At first, just turn your head away from your dog. Then turn back to give him a treat and release him from the stay. After a few repetitions, make things a little harder. After your dog is sitting or lying down on his spot, ask him to stay and then take one step toward the door. Return immediately, give your dog a treat and then release him from the stay with your release word or phrase. Gradually increase the number of steps that you take away from your dog and toward the door. Eventually you’ll be able to walk all the way to the door and back while your dog stays sitting or lying down on his spot. (Don’t forget to keep rewarding him for staying!) If your dog stands up or leaves his spot before you release him from the stay, say “Oops!” the moment he gets up. Then immediately tell him to sit or lie down on his spot again and stay. Wait a few seconds and then release him. You may have progressed too fast. Next time, make the exercise a little easier so your dog can succeed. Ask him to stay for a shorter period of time and don’t move as far away from him. When he’s successful at an easier level, you can gradually make the exercise harder again. Never end your dog’s stay from a distance. Instead, always return to him, say “Yes,” give him a treat, and then say “Okay” to release him.

If choosing a different place to walk is not practical, you will need to find different ways to stop your dog’s barking when another dog inevitably comes near. For example, when you see another dog, turn around and start walking away from that dog. If you can, do this before your dog even notices the other dog—do not wait until your dog reacts.[19]
ZenCrate – Smart Anxiety… Crates benefit both ends of the leash: your dog and you. They aren’t just relaxing and protective for your pup, they also provide you with peace of mind and precious moments of relaxation! Here are some of the reasons why crate training is beneficial:
First of all, if like me you use a crate, you simply cannot leave your puppy in the crate for many hours. They’ll be forced to potty in there after a very uncomfortable time trying to hold it for as long as they possibly can.

It needs to get used to your presence, but it can’t if you only go out there once a week. Find a way to spend more time out there. Put on some noise-cancelling headphones and read a book, start a garden, or do your workouts in the grass. At the very least, take some old shoes, t-shirts, and socks, then place them along the fence so the dog can get used to your smell. Make your presence known so it doesn’t surprise the dog anymore.

By Lori Chamberland on 11/02/2017 Affiliates If he's an older dog, he's probably used to his name; however, changing it isn't out of the question. If he's from a shelter, they may neglect to tell you that he has a temporary name assigned to him by staff. If he's from a breeder, he'll come to you with a long name, which you may want to shorten, or change. And if he's coming out of an abusive situation, a new name may represent a fresh start. But we're lucky: dogs are extremely adaptable. And soon enough, if you use it consistently, he will respond to his new name.
Clothes & Costumes Only show your pet the areas where they are allowed to be. For example, if the upstairs area or bedrooms are off limits, close them off and do not allow your puppy to explore there.

One of the most common—and worst—training mistakes is to punish the puppy once he finally does come. Sure, you’re irked that he ignored your frantic screaming his name to come. Maybe chasing him made you late for work. But you teach the wrong lesson by acting upset. He learns that when he finally comes he’ll be chastised, so he’s even less likely to obey the next time. Never punish when your puppy comes no matter how long it takes him to respond. Here’s how to teach your puppy to come on command.

K9 Nose Work is a fun search and scenting activity for virtually all dogs and people. Inspired by working detection dogs, it builds confidence and focus in your dog, and is a great way to provide mental and physical stimulation. It starts with getting your dog excited about searching boxes, which is the main focus in this Intro to Nose Work class. Your dog will be exposed to boxes and box puzzles in a variety of environments. Dogs work one at a time and rest in their crate while waiting to search, so reactive dogs can enjoy this sport as well. And shy or fearful dogs build confidence while overactive dogs put their energy into searching. You will build a tremendous bond with your dog as you learn to observe, understand and rely upon their fabulous nose and grow together as a team.
