Typical positive reinforcement events will satisfy some physiological or psychological need, so it can be food, a game, or a demonstration of affection. Different dogs will find different things reinforcing. Negative reinforcement occurs when a dog discovers that a particular response ends the presentation of an aversive stimulus. An aversive is anything that the dog does not like, such as verbal admonishment, or a tightened choke chain.[39]
We have a 9 week old labradoodle that doesn’t mind peeing in her crate, there have been several mornings where we wake up – only like 6-7 hours – and she’s covered in pee. Are we supposed to wake up several times in the night to take her out? Honestly we did at first, but if she wasn’t ready right then she would just go back to sleep in the grass or want to play and not go. So we would put her back to bed and would still wake to find her in pee. Suggestions?

Choosing a compatible breed/dog Zesty Paws (3) Training You may find it useful to keep a record of when your puppy eats sleeps, urinates and defecates. A simple diary list will do. Repeat cue words like ‘wee wees' and ‘poo poos' or ‘be busy' and ‘be clean' while the puppy is actually urinating or defecating. Use different words for each action so that you will be able to prompt the puppy later on.

Of course, it could just be the sound of you in your yard, or even your smell. If blocking the dog’s view won’t work, it’s time to kill them—wait for it—with kindness. The dog barks at you because it sees you as a danger to it and its family. So, in order to make it stop barking, you need to not be seen as a danger. Jen DeHaan, dog trainer and founder of DOGthusiast.com, suggests you make friends with the dog. Politely ask your neighbor if you can meet their dog and maybe play with it a little. You want the dog to get used to your presence and your scent. DeHaan recommends you have the neighbor bring their dog over to your yard too, so they can get a good lay of the land and its many smells. Food is an easy way to a dog’s heart too, but do not feed somebody else’s dog without their permission. The dog could have trouble digesting foods other dogs can, it could be on a very specifically timed diet for health reasons, or it could have allergies. The last thing you want is to make your neighbor’s dog sick. If you feel so inclined, ask the owner what kind of doggy treats they use, and ask if it’s alright for you to give them one from time to time.

Dog training can be socialisation to the domestic environment, basic obedience training or training for specialized activities including law enforcement, search and rescue, hunting, working with livestock, assistance to people with disabilities, entertainment, dog sports, detection and protecting people or property.

There are a variety of established methods of animals training, each with its adherents and critics. Some of the better known dog training procedures include the Koehler method, clicker training, motivational training, electronic training, model-rival training, dominance-based training, and relationship-based training. The common characteristics of successful methods are knowing the animal's attributes and personality, accurate timing of reinforcement and/or punishment and consistent communication. The use of punishment is controversial with both the humaneness and effectiveness questioned by many behaviourists.

Although they offer no substantive evidence of trauma or harm to dogs, they provide loads of speculation, anecdotes, insinuations of gender and educational inadequacies, and derogatory comments regarding the motivation and competence of IPO trainers in its place.” [64]

One thing you could do is have an extendable leash if the issue is just that the dog wants to move around more freely. That way you can give the dog more room to roam while still being in control, and the dog might not push as hard. If the pulling is due to the dog barking, a “choke” collar or a harness would be the best way to go. If you use a “choke” collar, however, go on a test walk with your dog after purchasing it. A choke collar should not actually choke the dog, so if it does, you should switch to a harness instead.

It is important to allow the puppy to experience different things – go on walks, take hikes in the woods, play in the park, or visit the beach. For experiences that make the puppy apprehensive, take steps to improve the situation or shorten its duration. Puppies will come to trust that you consistently make decisions in their best interest. This trust is the cornerstone for the teamwork needed for every successful therapy dog team.
